Often design and construction projects are adversarial and rife with distrust and finger pointing. Owners who are inexperienced with the building process are put in the middle of managing contracts with contractors and architects, and the outcome is often frustrating for all parties. The typical design-bid-build arrangement—with no contractual relationship between the contractor and the architect—has little incentive for either party to help the other be successful, let alone make the project a success for the owner. That’s why the sisters at Mount Grace Convent opted for the design-build process on a recent project.
